Okay so sometime in late November Brave Browser updated and I guess Chromium or something did too? Or maybe youtube’s stuff? But all of a sudden W2g stopped accepting my youtube account’s settings. Specifically that I have auto CC off. I’ve tried these fixes already
- Cleared cookies/cache
- Logged out of youtube and repeated step 1
- Logged back in after repeating the 2 above steps
- Tried it without Brave Shields on
- I have third party cookies accepted on both w2g and youtube
- I have changed my youtube settings again and again, on multiple browsers and on the mobile app.
- I have done it in a private window
- Yes I can use native controls on and hit CC off every time but I’m curious if there’s a fix for this I just don’t know?
I don’t see anyone else complaining about it so maybe I’m just dumb and missing something obvious but like even if I right click the video in the w2g room and see what account it’s playing off of? It’s mine. So it should be accepting my youtube settings yet it doesn’t. Some videos like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZtcZqAEW9IY will work just fine and not turn their CC on for some reason but the majority of videos like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=spxF-toJbd4 will put them on instantly.
I’ll deal with native controls and turning them off every time if I must but I would love to know if there is a real fix. Or if this is even a known thing?
Thank you very much for your bug report! I must admit that YouTube’s player remains somewhat of a mystery to me as well. There is no official documentation about which account settings will be used in embedded players and under what circumstances. As I understand it, this depends on whether third-party cookies are available in the iframe. Have you tried using a different browser for testing purposes? You can keep the native controls on all the time. This should not affect your account settings.
I have tried in Chrome, in Firefox, and in Brave on my phone and on the base explorer for android. All of it shows the cc regardless. Even if I’ve logged into youtube and turned off the auto cc, or even if I’m not logged in and the cc doesn’t show on the site itself. It’s only through w2g and it only started at the beginning of the month weirdly.
The videos you mentioned in your first post all play without subtitles on Watch2Gether. What is the language setting of your browser?
I’m also frustrated by the CC-auto-on. That’s not a feature, it’s a pain in the butt! My browsers’ default languages are set to English, I’ve cleared cookies, logged out, reboot, etc. and so forth.
I completely understand your frustration. I‘ll try to run some tests to better understand this. Officially there is not really a way to control CCs from your side. But maybe I can find a way to make this less annoying.
Like the other person, mine is English. And it’s weird cause if I watch things on youtube they don’t have subtitles on anything, mobile or any browser I get on. It’s only w2g. I doubt it’s doable but is there a way to add base option in w2g that just turns off cc itself naturally? I don’t know this stuff so I presume not but I don’t know many answers to this. I’ve done everything every help site or post talks about and none of it helps.
Thank you once again for your feedback. I think I’ve found the issue and have just rolled out an update. Could you please check whether CCs are still enabled by default?
So my room needed to reset but once I set up a new room it was good again! Thank you! I don’t know what fixed that or what broke it but you totally seem to have fixed my problem at least! I hope it stays this way but thank you so much this is such a pleasant surprise!!!
Great to hear that it works now. And thanks for being so persistent … I might have overlooked the issue otherwise.
