Title of videos in playlists aren't always the actual title

I tried to find an already existing bug entry for this but couldn’t find any, so I’m listing it in case it hasn’t been encountered by many people before.

Sometimes, video titles in the playlist view are not the actual title of the video as seen on YouTube; sometimes it even shows as the title in a different language, like many entries for The Amazing Digital Circus are showing the German title. I’ll add that I’m not German or using it in any way anywhere; if anything, my OS (Windows 10) and browser (Brave), are set in French. My YouTube account is set exclusively to English however.

There are other cases which suggest that the title used might be from the first title set initially for the video, or something along those lines, as a couple entries are showing titles with stuff like “Premiere at x pm”

Here are a couple examples, since I couldn’t include screenshots:
Format: Title on Youtube => Title on W2G

  • THE AMAZING DIGITAL CIRCUS - Ep 2: Candy Carrier Chaos! => DER UNGLAUBLICHE DIGITALE ZIRKUS EPISODE 2: Kandis-Klau-Karambolage!
  • Blood Sweat & Tears ft. Sheryl Lee Ralph | Official Music Video - League of Legends => Blood Sweat & Tears | Offizielles Musikvideo – League of Legends
  • K/DA - THE BADDEST ft. (G)I-DLE, Bea Miller, Wolftyla (Official Lyric Video) | League of Legends => K/DA - THE BADDEST Premiere @ 12PM PT (Pre-Release Single) | League of Legends

It is of course nowhere near a critical issue, but I thought that it would be a good thing to at least mention it, in case it could be a simple fix.

Thank you very much for your feedback. I think this is because YouTube sometimes translates video titles, and we may accidentally fetch the wrong version. Could you please share a link to a YouTube video where you can see this issue? Can you see the German title when you paste the link into the search bar?

I just applied a fix so that always the original title is being returned when you paste a link into the search bar. Maybe you can have a look and check if it works better for you now.

(Please note that this does not change the titles of videos already added to a playlist.)

Awesome, I wasn’t expecting a fix to be put in place this fast! I tried a bunch of videos that were doing it, and the proper title is now always showing in the playlist!

In case it might still be useful to you in the future, here’s the link to the first video I was referencing, which is an episode of the show The Amazing Digital Circus: https://youtu.be/4ofJpOEXrZs

Thank you so much for the quick fix, and for the amazing platform!

I wish you a wonderful day!

Thanks! Im happy i was able to help.

Hey, so, I did a session with a friend today, and I showed them that the name bug was fixed. In doing so, and while updating a couple of entries with the properly titled versions, I discovered that some part of it still happens in a very specific case.

If I go to a playlist, like, once again, the one for The Amazing Digital Circus (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLHovnlOusNLgvAbnxluXCVB3KLj8e4QB-), and that from this page, I right click on a video and do “Copy link”, (like this one for example : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ofJpOEXrZs&list=PLHovnlOusNLgvAbnxluXCVB3KLj8e4QB-&index=2&t=1s&pp=iAQB) then input this link in W2G searchbar, then all videos from the playlist will appear as results, and they all are titled in German.

Not that this is really an issue to me since your fix covers my regular usage more than enough, but I thought I’d let you know in case this would also be an easy fix, or for you to at least be aware of it ^^

Yes, you’re right that playlists are fetched differently to single videos, so the issue could still exist in this case. It seems to be somewhat random whether YouTube translates titles or not. Unfortunately, I think a final solution will only come with a major update to our search system, which will be rolled out over the next few months.
